When do you change tyres in Stockholm?
The short answer: winter tyres are required from 1 December to 31 March when there are winter road conditions, and most people in Stockholm switch back to summer tyres sometime in April. But there are a few details worth knowing, so you neither drive illegally nor end up last in the queue when everyone changes at once.
What the law says.
In Sweden, winter tyres are mandatory between 1 December and 31 March if there are winter road conditions, meaning snow, ice, slush or frost on the road. If the road is bare and dry during that period, driving on summer tyres is allowed, but the weather turns quickly this time of year, so most people keep winter tyres on for the whole period to be safe.
Studded tyres may be used from 1 October to 15 April. Outside that period they are only allowed if there are, or are expected to be, winter road conditions. Studless winter tyres have no such date limits and are what many people in the Stockholm area choose today.
A simpler rule of thumb.
Forget the dates for a moment and look at the thermometer. When the average temperature for the day settles below about 7 degrees, summer tyres lose grip, whether or not there is snow. In Stockholm that normally happens sometime in October or early November. That is a good time to switch to winter tyres.
In spring the opposite applies. When the nights no longer drop below zero and the risk of ice is gone, often around Easter or just after, it is time for summer tyres again. Driving on winter tyres well into summer wears them out early and gives a longer braking distance on warm asphalt.
The tip: stay ahead of the rush.
It is no coincidence that workshops are fully booked in October and November. Everyone waits for the first snow and changes the same week. That means queues, waiting times and a hard time finding a slot that suits you.
Book early and you avoid all of it. I come to you in Sollentuna, Upplands Väsby, Vallentuna, Täby, Danderyd, Djursholm and Lidingö, change the tyres where the car is parked, and you don't even need to take time off. The whole change takes about half an hour.
